Amelia’s Story
As Nelson’s Journey marks the significant milestone of having supported 10,000 children and young people we spoke with Amelia.
Read her story below:
When I was 3 I lost my dad, at that age I couldn’t understand what had happened and as I got older I began to really struggle with the reality of being a bereaved kid. I met with Nelson’s Journey when I was 7 and from there went on two separate activity weekends at Hilltop.
I look back on these weekends with joy, they were a big part of my journey and helped me come to terms with something I didn’t know how to talk about with anyone else. Being surrounded by other bereaved children meant that I was able to talk to people my own age who were struggling just as much as I was.
Nelson’s Journey didn’t heal everything, the years following were still tough at times, but through the support workers and the other kids, I learned that my pain, sadness, anger and even relief, were all valid, and that is something I carry with me to this day.
As an adult I am now volunteering for Nelson’s Journey myself and pursuing a career in child welfare. Without Nelson’s Journey, it’s safe to say I wouldn’t be where I am today.
