Mori & Ken’s Story

As Nelson’s Journey marks the significant milestone of having supported 10,000 children and young people we spoke with Mori & Ken.

Read their story below from Ken’s perspective:

“Mori’s mum, Wendy, died, at home, in 2020 from breast cancer. Mori was 10. She was introduced to Nelson’s Journey when at high school. We’d heard of the charity before then but as a result of counselling with Priscilla Bacon Lodge (PBL) sadly, coming to an end we were encouraged to contact Nelson’s Journey.

PBL were instrumental in liaising with Cromer academy and ourselves to make sure Mori got the on going help she required.

We were introduced to Nada, one of Nelson’s Journey Child Bereavement Support Workers, they struck it off nicely, Mori looked forward to their meetings. She was sad when that ended but better for the experience. She also attended a residential weekend at Hilltop. She was shy at first, loved it shortly after and had made good friends by the time I picked her up.

She’s very grounded now, a normal teenager. She misses her mum and probably misses the different outlook on life her mum would have brought to her but we get on well and she’ll chat to me if she needs to.

She’s a wonderful kid and I’m proud of the way she’s coped. With PBL and Nelson’s Journey helping along the way my job hasn’t really been too hard.”
